Loop Industries Unveils Twist™, a Fully Circular Polyester Resin Made from Textile Waste

August 01, 2025

According to a recent announcement by clean technology company Loop Industries, the firm has officially launched Twist™, a high-performance circular polyester resin derived entirely from textile waste. This move marks a significant step toward circularity in the fashion and textile industries, which continue to grapple with mounting environmental pressures and regulatory scrutiny.

As reported by Loop on its official website, Twist™ is positioned as the company’s flagship branded offering for textile and apparel customers. Originally developed as a fiber-grade PET resin, the product has been rebranded to reflect its broader mission: enabling a shift from linear production models to a fully circular textile economy. Loop is currently in advanced discussions with major global apparel brands for offtake agreements tied to its upcoming joint venture facility in India.

The resin is produced using Loop’s patented depolymerization technology, which breaks down polyester textile waste into its fundamental monomers—dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and monoethylene glycol (MEG). These components are then purified to virgin-grade quality and repolymerized into Twist™ resin. According to Loop, this process removes all dyes, contaminants, and blended fibers, yielding a material chemically identical to virgin polyester—yet entirely circular in origin.

According to Loop, Twist™ delivers not only environmental benefits but also manufacturing advantages. It provides exceptional purity, consistent color and dyeability, and compatibility with existing production infrastructure. Furthermore, the resin’s use could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 81% compared to virgin PET, potentially avoiding up to 418,600 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, equivalent to more than 1 billion miles driven by gasoline-powered vehicles.

In addition, Twist™ introduces full product traceability through embedded chemical tracers. This innovation allows brands and consumers to track final products back to their original textile waste inputs, meeting growing demand for transparency in sustainable sourcing and production. The traceability system supports brands in complying with tightening regulations in markets such as the EU, which recently introduced stricter requirements for sustainable textile labeling and recycling targets.

Production of Twist™ will be scaled at Loop’s Terrebonne facility and expanded at its forthcoming Infinite Loop™ India plant—a strategically located platform aimed at serving major apparel brands across Asia and beyond. According to the company, Twist™ will be offered at competitive prices, making it an economically viable alternative for brands seeking sustainable materials without compromising performance.

“Twist™ represents a major step forward in closing the loop for textiles,” said Giovanni Catino, Chief Revenue Officer at Loop Industries. “It supports the textile industry’s shift toward a circular model and provides a unique product offering which meets the needs of Loop’s customers as we secure agreements for the offtake of our India JV.”

The launch of Twist™ comes amid growing momentum in the textile-to-textile recycling space, where brands are under increasing pressure to meet sustainability commitments. Analysts note that materials with proven traceability and measurable climate benefits are likely to gain traction as new industry standards emerge.
