Mexico Moves Toward Circular Future with Tire Industry Pact
Mexico moved closer to its sustainability objectives as the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and the National Chamber of the Tire Industry (CNIH) signed a framework agreement to promote the responsible management of end-of-life tires. According to an official government announcement, the initiative is directly linked to the presidential commitment to establish a Circular Economy Park in Hidalgo, a project led by Environment Minister Alicia Bárcena Ibarra.
The agreement is expected to create a coordinating body that brings together manufacturers, distributors, recyclers, and public authorities to set technical standards, ensure traceability, and strengthen recovery systems for used tires. It also aims to introduce an extended producer responsibility (EPR) model for Mexico’s tire sector, in line with practices already adopted in other regions.
José Luis Samaniego Leyva, undersecretary of Sustainable Development and Circular Economy at SEMARNAT, underlined that moving away from landfilling is vital for Mexico’s environmental and economic future. He highlighted that the Circular Economy Park in Hidalgo represents a step toward ecological renewal in a region historically affected by industrial pollution.
Industry leaders also expressed support for the initiative. Juan Pablo Ríos y Valles Boysselle, President of CNIH, stated that the tire sector is firmly committing to circularity and views extended producer responsibility as the model to follow.
According to SEMARNAT, companies including Michelin, Pirelli, Bridgestone, and local recyclers will contribute technical expertise and infrastructure to strengthen tire recovery systems. The agreement also foresees nationwide awareness campaigns with state and municipal governments to promote responsible tire management among producers, distributors, and consumers.
Observers note that the Hidalgo Circular Economy Park, listed as Presidential Commitment No. 94, could serve as a model for similar projects nationwide if successfully implemented. Analysts noted that the project seeks to integrate industrial development with environmental and ESG objectives, aligning with broader sustainability trends.
