Greenback and Amcor Launch Advanced Recycling Trial in the UK

September 23, 2025

Greenback Recycling Technologies has begun the UK’s first deployment of its Enval® advanced recycling module at Amcor’s packaging facility in Heanor, Derbyshire. According to a joint announcement from the two companies, the unit will undergo a six-month commissioning and trial phase. The aim is to test how modular recycling systems can be integrated into existing industrial sites.

According to the announcement, this project represents the first time a global packaging producer in Europe is hosting Greenback’s chemical recycling technology. Industry observers noted that placing modular units directly within factories to process post-consumer flexible packaging waste could provide a pathway for more localized recycling solutions.

Greenback stated that the system is designed to handle difficult-to-recycle multilayer plastics and convert them into pyrolytic oil that can be used as feedstock for producing food-grade recycled plastics. The process will be verified through the company’s eco2Veritas™ digital traceability platform, which uses AI and IoT devices to certify the origin and quality of recycled materials.

“This partnership demonstrates the power of collaboration in driving scalable circular solutions,” said Philippe von Stauffenberg, CEO of Greenback, adding that real-time feedback from Amcor’s technical teams will be important in refining the system.

Andrew Green, Vice President of Amcor Flexibles Europe, Middle East and Africa, commented that combining Amcor’s operational expertise with Greenback’s technology may help improve recycling options for soft plastics and support customers’ sustainability goals.

The initiative is supported by funding from the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW). Analysts suggested that, depending on the trial results, similar modules might be considered for other Amcor facilities or industrial sites. The development comes as the UK prepares to tighten plastic waste management regulations, including extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes expected in the near future.

The companies added that, if the pilot achieves its objectives, Amcor may review opportunities for installing further modules, which could contribute to broader efforts toward circular packaging solutions.
