Mt. Diablo Resource Recovery Launches AI Recycling Project with Colgate and Glacier

Mt. Diablo Resource Recovery (MDRR) has announced a new collaboration with Colgate and technology firm Glacier to advance the use of artificial intelligence in recycling operations. According to the company’s statement, the initiative marks an important step toward improving sorting accuracy and reducing landfill waste.

The project introduces Glacier’s AI-powered camera systems at MDRR’s facilities, enabling real-time identification of toothpaste tubes and other personal care packaging such as lotion and shampoo tubes. By capturing detailed data on packaging flows, the system is expected to help optimize recycling processes and track progress toward circular economy goals.

Kish Rajan, Chief Executive Officer of MDRR, highlighted the importance of the alliance, stating that the partnership “represents a significant step forward in our mission to divert as much material as possible from landfills.”

Industry observers note that the use of AI tools in waste management is gaining momentum globally, driven by increasing regulatory pressure to enhance recycling rates and reduce contamination. In the United States, forthcoming state-level policies on packaging responsibility and producer accountability are expected to accelerate the adoption of such technologies. Analysts add that collaborations between consumer goods companies and recycling operators could set new benchmarks for sustainable packaging systems.

The initiative not only strengthens MDRR’s local operations but also signals how large brands like Colgate are seeking practical, scalable solutions to meet sustainability commitments.
