BZERO Secures €2.5 Million to Scale Home-Compostable Film Production

According to industry reports, Spanish biomaterials startup BZERO has secured €2.5 million in total funding to accelerate the commercialization of its home-compostable film technology, following an oversubscribed €1.5 million seed round. The company said the investment will support industrial-scale production and expand collaborations with food packaging manufacturers.
The seed round attracted backing from Ship2B Ventures, CTL Investments, Torribas, Impact Shakers Ventures and Viscofan. According to BZERO, the new funding increases total investment in the company to €2.5 million.
BZERO has developed a proprietary thermoplastic starch (TPS) technology to produce home-compostable films intended to replace low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in flexible packaging applications. The material can be manufactured in thicknesses of as little as 7 microns while maintaining mechanical strength comparable to conventional plastic films, the company said.
The compostable film is designed for products including shopping bags, labels, food nets and other flexible packaging formats. BZERO said its technology aims to provide an alternative to conventional polyethylene at a comparable cost, addressing growing demand for lower-impact packaging materials.
The newly raised capital will be used to expand production beyond the company’s current annual capacity of 300 tonnes, scale pilot projects with food packaging companies and continue developing its proprietary bioplastic formulations.
“We backed José and Cristina’s team at pre-seed to turn a lab-scale material into an industrial-ready product without losing sight of unit economics and environmental impact,” said Paula Cassà, Fundraising and Investment Manager at Ship2B Ventures. “BZERO is now converting its pilots into industrial contracts, which is why we've doubled down.”
The funding comes as packaging companies continue to explore alternative materials that can reduce reliance on conventional fossil-based plastics while meeting evolving regulatory and sustainability requirements. Alongside compostable materials, the sector is also seeing continued investment in recyclable high-performance films and other bio-based packaging technologies.
BZERO said the latest financing will help accelerate the transition from pilot-scale production to broader commercial deployment across flexible packaging markets.
