Reconomy and Polytag Roll Out New Tracking Partnership

Reconomy has formed a new partnership with technology company Polytag to expand real-time insights into packaging recycling across the UK, according to information released by both companies. The initiative is designed to help brands obtain reliable, verifiable evidence of how their packaging is handled once it enters recycling streams, supporting stronger sustainability reporting under tightening regulations.
According to company statements, the collaboration includes the installation of Polytag’s ultraviolet tag-detection and trace technology at Casepak’s Materials Recycling Facility. It is understood that the system will record real-time data showing where and when packaging is processed, giving brands the ability to track the end-of-life journey of their materials with much greater accuracy. Industry sources noted that such granular information is increasingly valuable as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements compel companies to demonstrate measurable progress on waste reduction.
According to reports from Reconomy, the data generated through Polytag’s system will also support redesign efforts by helping brands make packaging lighter, easier to recycle, and more cost-efficient from a compliance standpoint. Valpak—Reconomy’s packaging-data subsidiary—will integrate the new data streams into brand reporting systems. The company says major UK retailers already rely on its database, described as the largest of its kind in the country, to monitor packaging performance and identify opportunities for material savings.
It is understood that the installation forms part of the broader Ecotrace Programme, which has received support from well-known retailers such as Marks & Spencer, Ocado Retail, and Waitrose & Partners. According to sector sources, the programme aims to create a more transparent chain of evidence for consumer-packaging recycling, enabling all stakeholders to make more informed decisions about how to improve recovery rates.
Casepak Commercial Director Georgina Cullen said the new technology strengthens the combined value of Reconomy, Valpak and Polytag, describing it as an important step toward accelerating the transition to a circular economy. Valpak CEO Steve Gough said the collaboration enhances the company’s ability to support customers seeking accurate compliance data and lower carbon footprints. Polytag CTO Jon Anderson called the installation a “pivotal moment” for the Ecotrace Programme, noting that each new deployment brings the sector closer to a scalable and fully verifiable recycling-tracking system.
Analysts say the partnership reflects a broader shift in the UK packaging sector as data-driven waste-management tools become essential under evolving EPR rules. With pressure increasing from regulators, investors, and consumers to demonstrate real recycling outcomes, the availability of trusted, traceable data is expected to influence packaging-design strategies, procurement decisions, and long-term infrastructure investment. According to market observers, companies that establish strong data transparency early may gain a compliance and branding advantage as accountability standards continue to rise.
The partnership between Reconomy and Polytag represents a significant move toward a more transparent recycling ecosystem, offering brands clearer evidence of environmental performance and helping the industry advance circular-economy goals.
