Cleanfarms Marks 15 Years with Record Agricultural Plastics Recovery Across Canada

August 22, 2025

Cleanfarms, Canada’s national agri-plastics stewardship organization, has reported its strongest-ever results in recovering farm plastics, as collection volumes and recycling rates continue to climb nationwide. According to the group’s 2024 Annual Report, farmers and recycling partners helped divert over 10 million kilograms of agricultural plastics from landfills last year.

Based on Cleanfarms’ data, more than 10.1 million kilograms of agricultural plastics were collected in 2024—an increase from 9.2 million kilograms the year before. Small pesticide and fertilizer containers (under 23L) achieved a national recovery rate of 81%, while bulk containers rose to 62%. In Saskatchewan, grain bag recovery also reached 69%, continuing an upward trend.

Provincial figures further illustrate the scale of progress:

British Columbia: 88,000 kg collected, including crop protection containers, ag films, and unwanted pesticides.

Alberta: Small container recovery climbed to 456,000 kg (up from 416,000 kg).

Saskatchewan: Grain bag recovery grew to 1.77 million kg, while bulk container volumes rose to 50,200 units.

Manitoba: Small container collections increased by 44% year-over-year, reaching 263,000 kg.

Quebec: Ag film and twine collections surged to 2.3 million kg, with maple tubing also hitting a record 732,600 kg.

“We’re seeing the results of strong partnerships and hard work on the ground,” said Barry Friesen, Executive Director of Cleanfarms, emphasizing the critical role of farmers, site staff, and recyclers in making the system work.

Canada has been steadily tightening policies around plastic waste management in agriculture, in line with global sustainability goals. With increasing pressure to cut carbon emissions and reduce landfill use, agricultural plastic recovery is gaining recognition as a vital component of the circular economy. Experts note that Cleanfarms’ progress not only diverts waste but also creates value streams for recycled materials that can re-enter manufacturing supply chains. Looking forward, expansion of collection programs and improved farmer engagement are expected to further strengthen Canada’s leadership in agricultural sustainability.

As Cleanfarms moves into its 16th year, the organization is set to build on momentum by reaching more farmers, growing regional programs, and driving higher recovery rates in 2025.
