According to CRONIMET Group’s official press release, Revomet GmbH has signed a joint venture agreement with China’s CNGR Advanced Material Co. Ltd., under which CNGR is set to acquire a 25% equity stake in Revomet Bitterfeld GmbH. The transaction, based on a Heads of Agreement signed in December 2023, is still subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Once completed, the deal would represent a significant milestone in advancing a more circular supply chain for Europe’s battery materials.

Revomet Bitterfeld operates one of Europe’s most advanced recycling plants for processing production scrap and end-of-life battery materials. The new partnership aims to recover high-purity nickel, cobalt, and lithium, returning them to the production cycle to strengthen Europe’s independence in critical raw materials.

According to the companies’ statements, the joint venture leverages the following strengths:

Revomet contributes advanced recycling technologies, deep process know-how, and a solid presence in Germany, supported by offices in Leipzig and Karlsruhe.

CNGR brings long-standing expertise in precursor materials for cathodes (pCAM) as well as a broad global network across the battery industry.

CRONIMET Group, Revomet’s parent company, adds decades of recycling leadership and a well-established logistics and collection infrastructure throughout Europe.

“This partnership brings together cutting-edge recycling technologies, international market expertise and a strong logistics network – setting a new benchmark for sustainable value creation in the battery industry,” said Dr. Filipe Costa, Managing Director of Revomet GmbH.

Jürgen Pilarsky, CEO of the CRONIMET Group, added that the collaboration demonstrates how exchanging expertise across regions can “make a significant and, above all, sustainable contribution to an efficient and sustainable battery industry in Europe.”

According to the reports, the joint venture is among the first high-profile collaborations between a European and a Chinese company in the battery recycling sector. Europe is under growing regulatory pressure, including the EU Battery Regulation, which requires higher recycling rates and stricter traceability for critical raw materials. By combining China’s leadership in battery manufacturing with Europe’s recycling capabilities, the partnership could accelerate the continent’s progress toward a secure and sustainable battery value chain.

Analysts note that as demand for electric vehicles and energy storage systems grows, supply security for lithium, nickel, and cobalt will remain a central challenge. Initiatives like this joint venture could help Europe reduce dependence on imports while also advancing global sustainability goals.
