As automation continues to reshape the global recycling sector, Germany-based non-ferrous metals provider and one of the world’s largest copper recyclers, Aurubis AG, is taking a significant step forward. According to company sources, the firm has commissioned a fully automated and globally unprecedented sample preparation facility at its Hamburg site — a move expected to raise both the speed and consistency of material analysis in complex metal recycling.

The new system, capable of processing up to 20,000 samples annually, more than doubles the plant’s existing capacity and is expected to significantly enhance the precision and speed of material sampling in the recycling process. According to the company’s website, the system is designed as a key part of Aurubis’ broader automation strategy, aiming to set new standards in the metals recycling industry.

The facility uses a modular design to automatically prepare a wide variety of material types, including electronic scrap, slags, catalysts, sludges, concentrates, and anode slimes. Industry analysts note that such a level of versatility in sample processing remains unprecedented globally.

Aurubis reports that the new system reduces sample preparation time from five days to just one, representing a major leap in efficiency. “With this system, Aurubis is taking a major step forward and further solidifying its position as a trailblazer in complex metallurgy,” said Tim Kurth, Chief Operations Officer of Aurubis, in a press release.

The installation is also equipped with advanced filter and exhaust systems designed to meet high environmental and occupational safety standards. The closed, automated process is further supported by modern authentication technologies, which enhance both process security and reliability.

Michael Jordan, Plant Manager at the Hamburg facility, highlighted the operational benefits: “Our suppliers will directly benefit from reduced throughput times and consistently high-quality sample preparation. This new system is another significant milestone in our automation journey and strengthens the long-term competitiveness of our Hamburg site,” he stated.

According to company sources, the Hamburg installation follows a successful rollout of a similar system at Aurubis’ Lünen site in 2024. The company confirmed that additional facilities are scheduled to be upgraded with comparable technology in the coming years, furthering its commitment to innovation and efficiency across its operations.
