Alliance to End Plastic Waste Marks Five Years of Action, Unveils 2030 Strategy in Latest Progress Report

August 14, 2025

According to a press release issued on its official website, the Alliance to End Plastic Waste has published its Progress Report 2024: Evolving for Impact, outlining its achievements over the past five years and unveiling a new strategic roadmap aimed at accelerating the shift toward a circular economy for plastics.

Founded in 2019, the Alliance has worked with global partners to reduce nearly 240,000 tonnes of unmanaged plastic waste and to valorise more than 253,000 tonnes. Over the years, its initiatives have attracted significant third-party support, with US$610.89 million in funding committed by investors and development partners.

The report highlights six independently verified projects — including the African Reclaimers Organisation in South Africa and Recicleiros in Brazil — which have demonstrated measurable progress in plastic waste reduction and recycling. The Alliance also emphasised its commitment to a “just transition,” reporting that 2,134 formal jobs have been created through its programmes, alongside increased support for women-owned businesses and informal waste workers.

President and CEO Jacob Duer stated that the new “Strategy 2030” draws on the lessons learned from projects in emerging economies. “We are doubling down on what works to drive greater impact at scale,” he said.

Under the new plan, the Alliance will prioritise large-scale, integrated initiatives developed in collaboration with governments, financial institutions, and civil society organisations. These will either be country-specific — aligned with national waste management priorities — or thematic, targeting persistent global challenges such as flexible plastics recycling.

The first three focus countries will be India, Indonesia, and South Africa. In addition, the Alliance plans to expand its capital mobilisation efforts by leveraging blended finance, concessional funding, and partnerships with both public and private investors to accelerate waste management infrastructure development.

Tracey Campbell, Chair of the Alliance’s Board, noted that aligning industries, governments, and communities behind tested solutions is key to achieving measurable change. “The Alliance will continue to drive progress on the ground while sharing insights with partners ready to shape a circular, more sustainable future,” she said.

The full Progress Report 2024 is available on the Alliance’s official website.
