Yukon Becomes First Canadian Territory to Launch EPR Battery Recycling Program with Call2Recycle

July 04, 2025

Yukon has officially become the first territory in Canada to implement an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program for household battery recycling, according to an announcement by Call2Recycle. The initiative, which launched on July 1, 2025, is part of Call2Recycle’s nationwide “Recycle Your Batteries, Canada!” campaign.

The program, introduced in collaboration with the Government of Yukon, is intended to provide residents with safer and more convenient ways to dispose of used household batteries. According to the organization’s official statement, the move reflects Yukon’s broader commitment to sustainability and circular economy objectives, while also helping battery producers meet their regulatory obligations under EPR frameworks.

“This launch represents an exciting new chapter for Call2Recycle and for Canada’s battery recycling landscape,” said Joe Zenobio, President and CEO of Call2Recycle. “Expanding into Yukon not only strengthens our national presence but also highlights the growing momentum for EPR solutions across Canada.”

As part of the program rollout, residents across Yukon will gain access to a growing network of battery drop-off points, including locations at retail stores, government buildings, municipal centers, and other public facilities. These sites aim to ensure that both urban and remote communities have equal access to responsible recycling services.

The launch in Yukon follows a series of similar program expansions across several Canadian provinces. According to Call2Recycle’s 2024 impact report, the organization collected more than 6.8 million kilograms of used batteries across the country last year, a figure that underscores its leadership role in environmental protection and sustainable material recovery.

With nearly 30 years of operational experience and a nationwide collection network of nearly 15,000 drop-off sites, Call2Recycle continues to lead battery stewardship efforts across Canada.

Residents of Yukon are encouraged to participate by dropping off their used batteries at designated collection locations. For more information and to find the nearest drop-off site, visit the official Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! website.
