LONGi Joins Forces with Rafiqui to Boost Solar Panel Recycling in Mexico
According to LONGi’s official announcement, the world-renowned photovoltaic (PV) technology manufacturer has entered into a partnership with Rafiqui, a Mexico-based non-profit civil organization focused on solar module recycling. The collaboration, reportedly established in conjunction with local energy sector companies, is intended to develop much-needed recycling infrastructure for end-of-life solar panels in the country.
As reported by multiple industry sources, Mexico currently faces a significant gap in sustainable disposal solutions for decommissioned photovoltaic modules. This has become an increasingly urgent issue for solar developers, operators, and installers amid the country’s rapid solar adoption. The partnership between LONGi and Rafiqui is seen as a crucial step toward creating a scalable, responsible framework for solar panel end-of-life management.
LONGi is notably the first solar module manufacturer to directly participate in this initiative, marking a substantial advancement in the industry’s environmental stewardship efforts in Mexico. According to information available on Rafiqui’s website, the initiative aims to reduce the environmental footprint of the PV industry while fostering a circular economy model.
This collaboration aligns with LONGi’s broader international sustainability strategy. The company has previously supported the certification of SunR—a leading PV recycler in Brazil—as well as the international PV Cycle recycling association, which recently launched operations in Latin America. According to the company’s global disclosures, LONGi already holds PV Cycle certification in regions such as China, the United States, and several European countries.
The Mexican initiative also reflects LONGi’s corporate philosophy of “Solar for Solar,” which promotes the use of solar energy as a driver of sustainable practices within the industry itself. By addressing a critical environmental challenge in Mexico, LONGi not only supports its local partners but also strengthens its leadership position in global green innovation.
Moreover, the partnership reinforces LONGi’s sustainability goals as outlined in its 2024 Sustainability Report. According to the report, the company achieved a 9.14% year-over-year reduction in electricity consumption per unit, sourced 47.5% of its total energy from renewable sources, and reached a non-hazardous waste recycling rate of 82.7%—exceeding its 80% target. The project with Rafiqui further highlights LONGi’s commitment to integrating environmental and social responsibility into every aspect of its operations.
