Caracal Expands Healthcare Recycling Services with New Charlotte Facility

According to company reports, Caracal Products & Services has opened a new facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, expanding its healthcare recycling services for hospitals and healthcare centers across the region. The location will support recycling programs for personal protective equipment (PPE), cold-chain materials and other healthcare waste streams.

The new Charlotte operation adds to Caracal’s existing recycling and product distribution facilities in New York and Baltimore. The company said the location will provide a regional base for collecting, sorting and handling recyclable materials generated by healthcare providers.

Healthcare facilities generate millions of tonnes of waste each year, much of which is classified as non-hazardous. Caracal works with healthcare systems to recover commonly discarded operating-room materials, including polypropylene and polyethylene, with the aim of diverting suitable materials from landfills.

“With this new Charlotte location, we're giving health care providers in the region a partner who can turn that waste stream into a win for both sustainability and public health,” said Paul Sessions, Vice President and General Manager of Recycling at Caracal.

The Charlotte facility includes office space for marketing and customer service teams and warehouse space for sorting and processing recyclable materials. Industrial balers will compress recovered materials into bales for shipment to downstream recyclers.

At recycling facilities, polypropylene materials can be shredded and melted into plastic pellets, which can then be used to manufacture new products. Caracal said its healthcare recycling programs can help participating hospitals reduce waste volumes and disposal costs while supporting their environmental objectives.

The company is working with healthcare systems and hospitals that have set targets to increase the recycling of disposable materials, including plastic bags, cardboard and shrink wrap. Caracal said it plans to establish additional locations along the U.S. East Coast as demand for healthcare recycling services grows.

The company did not disclose the investment or processing capacity of the Charlotte facility.
