AISI: U.S. Steel Shipments Dip Slightly in May, But Stay Ahead Year-to-Date

July 07, 2025

According to data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), U.S. steel mills shipped a total of 7,507,349 net tons in May 2025, marking a 1.0% decrease from the 7,580,635 net tons reported in April. However, shipments were up slightly by 1.0% compared to the 7,431,201 net tons recorded in May 2024.

Despite the monthly dip, year-to-date (YTD) steel shipments from January through May 2025 totaled 37,285,289 net tons, representing a 1.9% increase over the 36,607,546 net tons shipped during the same period in 2024, according to AISI statistics.

The AISI report also provided a breakdown of product-specific shipment changes when comparing the first five months of 2025 to the same period last year. Shipments of cold rolled sheet and strip rose by 1%, while corrosion-resistant sheet and strip fell by 1%. Shipments of hot rolled sheet and strip declined by 2%.

Industry analysts suggest that while monthly fluctuations are common due to seasonal and market dynamics, the slight YTD growth may signal ongoing stability in the domestic steel sector.
