SMI Expands Kansas Operations with Acquisition of Two Recycling Facilities

June 12, 2025

Scrap Management Industries (SMI), a Missouri-based company, has announced the acquisition of two long-standing recycling centers in Kansas, further strengthening its position in the Midwestern scrap metal industry.

According to a press release published on the company’s official website, SMI has acquired 12th & Haskell Recycle Center in Lawrence and East Wilson Recycle in Ottawa, marking the company’s eighth and ninth operational sites. Both facilities have served their communities for over 20 years, providing recycling services for both ferrous and nonferrous metals.

Following the acquisition, the sites will operate under the new names Scrap Management Industries – Lawrence and Scrap Management Industries – Ottawa, and will continue offering full-service metal recycling. The move is seen as part of SMI’s broader strategy to expand its geographic footprint and provide tailored scrap solutions for industrial, commercial, and residential customers across the region, the company noted.

“This acquisition aligns with our long-term growth strategy and reinforces our commitment to providing sustainable, efficient and responsible recycling solutions,” said Jerrit Burgess, President and CEO of SMI, in a statement. “By adding the Lawrence and Ottawa locations, we are well-positioned to better serve our industrial partners, small businesses and individual recyclers while expanding our presence and impact in the region.”

According to company data, the Lawrence facility is located at 1006 E. 11th Street, while the Ottawa site is at 2202 East Wilson Street. Both will function as feeder yards supporting SMI’s main processing hub in Kansas City, improving the logistical efficiency of material collection and redistribution.

A total of 15 employees from the newly acquired centers will remain onboard, continuing to serve existing clients while gaining access to SMI’s broader network of industrial partners and dealers.

Industry analysts note that the U.S. scrap metal recycling sector has seen increased consolidation in recent years, as recyclers seek to streamline operations and expand regionally. The acquisition by SMI reflects this trend and highlights the company’s proactive approach to scaling sustainably.
