PureCycle’s Recycled Resin Nears Use in P&G Packaging
According to a recent announcement from PureCycle Technologies, Inc., the company’s proprietary PureFive™ recycled polypropylene (PP) resin has advanced significantly toward integration into commercial packaging for Procter & Gamble (P&G) products. The resin has successfully cleared multiple qualification stages for use in spout and dosing caps of selected P&G bottles—marking one of the first large-scale product applications for PureCycle’s recycled material.
According to PureCycle, scaled production testing for these components is scheduled to begin in the coming months, with full-scale production anticipated by late 2025 and commercial availability expected in early 2026.
The qualification process involves several technical hurdles. First, the PureFive Choice™ resin must be molded successfully by a designated packaging converter. Then, the material is tested to ensure its ability to match the exact color specifications of the product lines it will serve. Finally, the components undergo rigorous drop testing to verify they meet performance standards for strength and durability.
PureCycle CEO Dustin Olson emphasized the significance of the milestone, stating, “P&G has supported PureCycle since the beginning and we’re now at a point where we are ready to supply them with recycled polypropylene for some of their most recognizable brands.” Olson added, “PureCycle’s dissolution technology is a game-changer for the industry and these spouts and caps are just the beginning. These applications prove that we can take post-consumer waste and turn it into a high-quality, colorable, moldable product that can help companies like P&G reach their sustainability goals.”
PureCycle’s recycling technology is based on a patented dissolution process originally developed by scientists at P&G. The company holds exclusive rights to commercialize this process for converting used polypropylene into near-virgin quality resin.
LeeEllen Drechsler, Senior Vice President of Corporate R&D at P&G, also commented on the development: “Our vision of transforming the polypropylene recycling process with a method that reduces our dependence on virgin plastics is coming to life through PureCycle. We are working toward integrating their PureFive™ resin with many of our brands’ packaging applications in the coming year.”
The collaboration between the two companies represents a notable step forward in the circular economy for plastics, potentially reducing the environmental footprint of widely used consumer products.
