Prysmian and Aurubis Sign Long-Term Copper Wire Rod Supply Agreement

According to company reports, Prysmian and Aurubis have signed a long-term agreement for the supply of copper wire rod, strengthening a strategic partnership between the two companies that has lasted more than 30 years.

The agreement is aimed at securing copper supply as demand rises across power grids, renewable energy, electrification and digital infrastructure. The companies said the partnership will also support European production, recycling and lower-carbon copper rod and cable supply.

Aurubis, one of Europe’s major vertically integrated copper producers, currently manufactures copper wire rod with approximately 36% recycled material content. The company operates four copper rod plants across Europe, providing Prysmian with supply flexibility and proximity to key markets. Aurubis said the carbon footprint of its copper rod is significantly below the global industry average.

“As the world’s largest buyer of copper wire rod, Prysmian has both an opportunity and a responsibility to help shape the future of the copper value chain,” said Alberto Boffelli, Chief Operating Officer at Prysmian. He added that the agreement will provide reliable and increasingly sustainable copper supply while supporting Europe’s access to the material.

The agreement is the largest contract between Prysmian and Aurubis to date, according to Aurubis CEO Toralf Haag. Both companies said their cooperation will focus on more sustainable copper value chains, including recycling and decarbonization.

All four of Aurubis’ copper rod mills have received The Copper Mark, an independent assurance framework covering responsible copper production, sourcing and recycling. Prysmian is also a member of The Copper Mark.

The companies said the agreement will help strengthen the supply of copper for electrification, energy infrastructure and digital networks while supporting the resilience of Europe’s copper value chain.
