Metallium Expands into Massachusetts and Virginia with New E-Waste Facilities

Metallium Ltd. has secured exclusive lease options for two U.S. locations permitted for electronic waste processing, reinforcing its strategy to scale up its Flash Joule Heating (FJH) metal recovery technology across multiple states. According to the company’s latest announcement, the new sites are located in Westport, Massachusetts, and Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The Massachusetts site is embedded within Mid-City Scrap’s long-standing metals processing campus, while the Virginia site is based at Recycle Management LLC’s recycling hub, strategically positioned near Northern Virginia’s extensive data center corridor — a global hotspot for hyperscale and telecom-related e-waste.

Both locations are already approved at the federal and state levels for industrial and e-waste processing, according to the company. This regulatory readiness eliminates the lengthy permitting delays that often hinder U.S. recycling projects, potentially accelerating Metallium’s deployment schedule. Each site is co-located with operational scrap yards processing more than 20,000 tons of metal waste per month, providing immediate synergies for feedstock supply.

“Texas remains our clear priority, and these option agreements demonstrate we can replicate our Texas model by accessing pre-permitted, infrastructure-ready sites at minimal upfront costs,” said Michael Walshe, Metallium’s Managing Director and CEO. He added that expanding into multiple states strengthens partnerships, increases access to feedstock, and supports engagement with U.S. government agencies for funding opportunities.

Metallium’s expansion comes at a time when the U.S. is intensifying efforts to secure domestic sources of critical and rare metals, driven by clean energy policies and national security concerns. The company’s patented FJH process offers a low-carbon, high-efficiency pathway for recovering valuable materials — such as gallium, germanium, antimony, rare earths, and gold — from e-waste and industrial feedstocks. Analysts note that by tapping into pre-permitted facilities, Metallium may significantly shorten commercialization timelines compared to traditional recycling ventures.

With its flagship Texas technology campus on track for commissioning by the end of this year, Metallium’s move into Massachusetts and Virginia underscores its ambition to establish a scalable, nationwide recycling footprint, positioning the company as a key player in the U.S. circular economy.
