Hyundai Motor Expands Community Recycling Efforts with New Plastic Resource Facility in Indonesia

According to a report by Pulse, Hyundai Motor has inaugurated a new plastic resource recycling facility in Bekasi, Indonesia, further strengthening its commitment to sustainable community development and circular resource use.

The new center, located near Hyundai’s manufacturing plant in Bekasi, builds upon the company’s 2022 establishment of a local recycling hub. The upgraded facility is designed to process collected waste plastics through washing, shredding, and reformation into reusable raw materials, while also serving as a venue for environmental education and community engagement.

According to the report, a local cooperative will manage the day-to-day operations, with revenues reinvested to maintain long-term sustainability. Hyundai Motor, in partnership with international NGO Good Neighbors, will assist in cooperative organization, workforce training, and technical support. The collaboration also includes educational programs aimed at increasing public awareness of recycling and resource circulation.

Indonesia has been identified as one of the world’s largest sources of ocean-bound plastic waste, prompting both the public and private sectors to accelerate recycling and community-based environmental initiatives. The country has been taking steps to improve waste management through both public and private sector initiatives. The government has set broad goals to reduce plastic pollution and encourage recycling as part of its national sustainability agenda. Corporate-led projects such as Hyundai’s reflect a growing regional trend where manufacturers integrate environmental and social goals into their business operations.

By involving local communities in its sustainability initiatives, Hyundai aims to strengthen its ESG practices while promoting localized circular economy approaches. Industry observers note that such community-based recycling models may play an increasingly important role in supporting corporate sustainability efforts in emerging markets.
