RecyClass Certification Now Covers Majority of Europe’s Plastic Recycling

September 17, 2025

More than half of Europe’s installed plastic recycling capacity is now certified under the RecyClass Recycling Process Certification scheme, strengthening industry-wide transparency and compliance with EU standards, according to a recent update from the organization.

RecyClass reported that its certification program has rapidly grown since its launch three years ago, now covering around 60% of total installed recycling capacity across the continent. The scheme has become a leading benchmark for plastics traceability, ensuring that recycling operations are verified under reliable standards. In 2024, certification levels reached 58% for HDPE/PP, 62% for ELV-WEEE, 70% for LDPE, and 75% for PET, underscoring the growing reliance of the sector on trusted certification to deliver high-quality recycled materials to the market.

The organization noted that it currently works with 11 accredited and seven recognized third-party certification bodies, supported by more than 120 auditors authorized to issue Recycling Process Certificates. This network allows recyclers to demonstrate the traceability of their operations at scale, while preparing for more demanding legislative requirements such as the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

“RecyClass Recycling Process Certification has become the benchmark for companies seeking to certify their recycling processes and comply with the EN 15343:2007 standard,” said Paolo Glerean, Chairman of RecyClass.

Industry observers note that the rise of certification comes at a pivotal moment, as regulators and brands are increasingly requiring proof of recycled content and transparent supply chains. In this context, schemes such as RecyClass provide recyclers with both compliance assurance and a competitive advantage in attracting partnerships and entering regulated markets. With demand for recycled plastics on the rise, credible certification is emerging as a decisive factor in shaping the industry’s future.

By certifying more than half of Europe’s installed recycling capacity, RecyClass has established itself as a key player in the continent’s transition toward a circular plastics economy. The growing momentum suggests that certification will continue to play an essential role in aligning industry practices with Europe’s sustainability ambitions.
