PROFEPA and ECOCE Strengthen Plastic Recycling Efforts in Mexico

Mexico’s Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) and Ecología y Compromiso Empresarial (ECOCE) have signed a collaboration agreement to strengthen the circular management of plastic materials, environmental education and responsible waste management, according to PROFEPA.

Signed on September 1, the agreement establishes a framework for joint training programs, awareness campaigns, technical assistance, and the collection, recovery and recycling of postconsumer containers and packaging. The initiatives will involve government authorities, companies, organizations, educational institutions and the public, with the aim of improving waste separation and preventing recyclable materials from being abandoned in the environment.

The partnership will include training sessions, seminars, workshops and outreach activities focused on proper waste separation, circular material management and compliance with environmental regulations. PROFEPA and ECOCE will also work to generate data on recovered material volumes, document their traceability and share results to assess the environmental benefits of recycling and material recovery.

The agreement builds on previous cooperation between the organizations. ECOCE participated in PROFEPA’s “Gol por el Ambiente” campaign, which promotes the recovery and circular management of used plastics and textiles. In the campaign’s first stage, 330 participating institutions registered 368 projects targeting the recovery and reintegration of more than 1.4 million kilograms of used materials into new production cycles.

PROFEPA said the new agreement is part of its broader prevention strategy and will support mechanisms for self-regulation and environmental responsibility. The agency will monitor activities conducted under the partnership and support initiatives aimed at preventing environmental damage.

Mariana Boy, Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection, said the agreement with ECOCE would help strengthen a culture of circularity and environmental responsibility by promoting the recovery of materials and their reintegration into productive uses.

ECOCE Director Jorge Terrazas said the partnership would combine the capabilities of different stakeholders and strengthen environmental education through practical actions that give materials a second life.

The collaboration comes as Mexico expands initiatives aimed at improving the recovery and circular management of plastics. In August, PROFEPA reported that a second stage of the “Gol por el Ambiente” campaign had recovered and recycled more than 644 kilograms of single-use plastics, with ECOCE and Rennueva supporting the material’s recovery, recycling and reintegration into new production cycles.
