Novelis Extends Infinitum Partnership to Reinforce Closed-Loop Can Recycling in Norway

Aluminium producer Novelis has extended its long-running partnership with Norwegian deposit system operator Infinitum to continue processing used beverage cans collected in Norway and returning the material into new can production.
Under the agreement, post-consumer aluminium collected through Infinitum’s deposit return system will be transported to Novelis’ recycling facility in Latchford, United Kingdom. The material is then processed into aluminium can sheet for reuse in new beverage containers, maintaining a closed-loop system.
Infinitum operates Norway’s national deposit return scheme, which consistently achieves high collection rates for beverage containers. Novelis, one of the world’s largest aluminium recyclers, relies on such systems to secure a stable supply of high-quality scrap for its European operations.
The renewed partnership strengthens an established material flow between Norway and the UK, ensuring that collected cans are returned directly into the production cycle rather than diverted into lower-grade applications. Both companies said the arrangement supports efficient logistics and traceability across the recycling chain.
Alexandre Gellert, vice president of metal procurement at Novelis Europe, said the agreement helps secure a consistent stream of post-consumer aluminium. He added that integrating this material into the company’s recycling and rolling operations supports higher recycled content and lower emissions.
Kjell Olav A. Maldum said transparency on volumes, quality and delivery timelines has been central to maintaining system stability. He noted that the partnership enables predictable outcomes in both cost and environmental performance.
The extension aligns with Novelis’ “Vision 3×30” targets, which include increasing average recycled content to 75% and reducing emissions intensity to below 3 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of flat-rolled aluminium by 2030.
The agreement comes as regulators and producers across Europe place greater emphasis on circular material use and emissions reduction, particularly in packaging supply chains where recycled content targets are tightening.
