Gold Prices Dropped! SUNSHINE Weekly Metal Prices Tracker: May 12-16, 2025

This week (May 12 to 16, 2025), metal prices exhibited some fluctuations across different markets. Based on the price data from the China, India, UK, and US Exchanges on the SUNSHINE, the following is a report on Copper, Aluminum, Gold, and Silver prices. 

Copper Prices 

This week, copper prices fluctuated across countries. India’s copper price remained relatively stable, with a slight overall increase. In contrast, copper prices in China, the UK, and the US declined after experiencing some volatility. 

China: Copper prices in China showed a mild overall decline this week, with some intra-week fluctuations. The price closed at 78,140 CNY/MT (May 16), down from 78,260 CNY/MT (May 12), a decrease of 120 CNY/MT or 0.15%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), the price increased by 0.89%. 

India: Copper prices in India were relatively stable with minimal fluctuations, registering a slight overall increase from 851.3 INR/kg (May 12) to 852.1 INR/kg (May 16), an increase of 0.8 INR/kg or 0.09%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), the price rose by 0.06%. 

United Kingdom: Copper prices in the UK initially rose and then declined, with mild fluctuations overall. Prices dropped from 9,520.5 USD/MT (May 12) to 9,447.5 USD/MT (May 16), a decrease of 73 USD/MT or 0.77%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), there was a slight increase of 0.02%. 

United States: Copper prices in the US were highly volatile this week, with the highest daily increase of 2.09% (May 13) and the largest daily drop of 2.00% (May 16). Overall, prices fell from 4.58 USD/Lb (May 12) to 4.5535 USD/Lb (May 16), a decrease of 0.0265 USD/Lb or 0.58%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), the drop was more significant, totaling 1.11%. 

Aluminum Prices 

Aluminum prices across countries followed a similar pattern this week—rising in the first three days and falling over the last two. While aluminum prices in the US showed a slight decrease, those in China, the UK, and India recorded increases. 

China: Aluminum prices in China rose initially and then declined steadily, resulting in an overall increase. Prices climbed from 19,910 CNY/MT (May 12) to 20,175 CNY/MT (May 16), a rise of 265 CNY/MT or 1.33%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), the increase was more pronounced at 3.01%. 

India: Aluminum prices in India experienced fluctuations, with the highest daily increase reaching 1.79% on May 14. Overall, prices rose from 237.35 INR/kg (May 12) to 239.5 INR/kg (May 16), an increase of 2.15 INR/kg or 0.91%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), the rise was more substantial at 2.55%. 

United Kingdom: Aluminum prices in the UK fluctuated moderately, with the steepest daily drop of 1.56% occurring on May 15. Overall, prices showed a slight increase from 2,480 USD/MT (May 12) to 2,481.5 USD/MT (May 16), a gain of 1.5 USD/MT or 0.06%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), the increase was more notable at 2.65%. 

United States: Aluminum prices in the US experienced considerable volatility, with the largest daily drop of 2.23% on May 15. Overall, prices declined slightly from 2,394.25 USD/MT (May 12) to 2,375.75 USD/MT (May 16), a decrease of 18.5 USD/MT or 0.77%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), however, prices rose significantly by 3.18%. 

Gold Prices 

Gold prices declined across all observed countries this week. China experienced a notable drop, while India and the US saw fluctuations with an overall downward trend. 

China: Gold prices in China fell consecutively this week before rebounding on May 16. The steepest daily drop was 2.90% on May 15, followed by a 1.65% recovery, closing at 749.8 CNY/g (May 16). Overall, prices declined from 770.3 CNY/g (May 12) to 749.8 CNY/g (May 16), a decrease of 20.5 CNY/g or 2.66%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), the drop was more significant at 4.64%. 

India: Gold prices in India fluctuated mildly this week, with a slight overall decline from 9,290.1 INR/g (May 12) to 9,244.1 INR/g (May 16), a drop of 46 INR/g or 0.50%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), the decline was more pronounced at 4.22%. 

United States: Gold prices in the US were highly volatile, with the highest daily increase of 1.78% on May 15 and the sharpest drop of 2.45% on May 14. Overall, prices declined from 3,230 USD/oz t (May 12) to 3,191.8 USD/oz t (May 16), a decrease of 38.2 USD/oz t or 1.18%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), the decline was more substantial at 4.04%. 

Silver Prices 

Silver prices declined across countries this week, showing varying degrees of volatility. China and the US experienced more pronounced declines, while India’s silver prices remained relatively stable with only minor losses. 

China: After several days of decline, silver prices in China rebounded slightly. The steepest daily loss reached 2.21% on May 15. Overall, prices fell from 8,232 CNY/kg (May 12) to 8,083 CNY/kg (May 16), a drop of 149 CNY/kg or 1.81%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), the decline was 1.04%. 

India: Silver prices in India showed mild fluctuations, stabilizing over the last two days. Overall, prices dipped slightly from 95,344 INR/kg (May 12) to 95,318 INR/kg (May 16), a decrease of 26 INR/kg or 0.03%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), the drop was more significant at 1.46%. 

United States: Silver prices in the US were quite volatile this week, with the largest daily drop of 2.42% on May 14. Overall, prices declined from 32.56 USD/oz t (May 12) to 32.195 USD/oz t (May 16), a decrease of 0.365 USD/oz t or 1.12%. Compared to the previous week (reference date: May 9), the decline was 1.63%.
