EGA to Commit $4 Billion for New Aluminum Production Facility in Oklahoma, USA
According to a recent announcement from Emirates Global Aluminum (EGA), a leading producer of premium aluminum, the company is advancing its plans to build the first new primary aluminum production plant in the United States since 1980. The proposed facility, located in Inola, Oklahoma, will have an annual production capacity of 600,000 tonnes of primary aluminum, significantly increasing U.S. production and reducing dependence on imported aluminum.
As reported by EGA, the new plant aims to address the growing demand for aluminum, a crucial material for industries such as automotive, aviation, and construction, which currently meet 85% of their aluminum needs through imports. The plant is expected to start construction after a feasibility study is completed, with production of the first hot metal anticipated by the end of the decade. The total investment in the project is estimated at $4 billion.
The facility will be built in the industrial park at the Tulsa Port of Inola, a location selected for its efficient access to the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System (M-KARNS), which connects to the Mississippi River. This will provide logistical advantages for the transport of bulk materials, as reported by EGA.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt expressed strong support for the project, stating, “We want more goods to be manufactured in Oklahoma and EGA is the perfect partner. My administration has worked closely with the company for over a year to clear the way for the first new primary aluminum production plant in the United States for more than four decades right here in our great state.” Governor Stitt also highlighted the project’s potential to create jobs and boost the local economy, positioning Oklahoma as a hub for strategic industries.
According to EGA, the project will create up to 4,000 jobs during peak construction and an estimated 1,000 permanent jobs once the facility is operational. Furthermore, the plant is expected to stimulate the creation of a new aluminum-focused industrial hub in the region, providing additional employment opportunities in both the upstream supply chain and downstream manufacturing.
The U.S. has long been an important market for EGA, and the new plant will further strengthen its presence. EGA America, the company’s U.S. distributor, is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, and has significant involvement in the country’s aluminum fabrication sector. Additionally, EGA already has US recycled aluminum production capacity through the company’s 80 percent shareholding in EGA Spectro Alloys in Rosemount, Minnesota, which was acquired in 2024 and is investing to expand its recycled aluminum capacity in the U.S.
