Europe Launches FAE Initiative to Scale Textile-to-Textile Recycling

According to industry reports, the European platform Fashion for Good has launched the Feedstock Activation Europe (FAE) project, an industrial initiative aimed at scaling textile-to-textile recycling by improving sorting and pre-processing of post-consumer waste across the region.
The program targets a key constraint in Europe’s recycling chain: the limited availability of consistent, high-quality feedstock for fiber-to-fiber recyclers. By developing advanced sorting systems and pre-treatment processes, FAE seeks to convert mixed and low-grade textile waste into usable raw materials for industrial recycling.
Europe generates close to 13 million tonnes of textile waste annually, according to European Commission estimates, much of which currently ends up in low-value applications or disposal streams due to insufficient processing infrastructure.
The initiative is backed by major apparel companies including Adidas, Bestseller and Inditex, with additional support from industry groups ReHubs and Rematters. The partners aim to establish a scalable operating model capable of supplying stable and homogeneous feedstock to recyclers.
FAE is structured around two core workstreams: the development of technologies for pre-processing textile waste, such as separating blended fibers and removing elastane, and the rollout of regional sorting hubs designed to operate at an industrial scale.
The project aligns with the tightening European Union policy on textile waste. Amendments to the Waste Framework Directive adopted in 2025 introduce mandatory extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes for textiles, requiring brands to finance the collection and treatment of end-of-life products. At the same time, separate textile collection has become mandatory, and restrictions on landfill and incineration are set to further limit disposal options.
These regulatory changes are shifting the cost structure of textile waste management toward producers and increasing pressure to develop viable recycling pathways. FAE is positioned as an industrial response, aiming to build the missing infrastructure needed to support a circular textile value chain.
