Altilium Announces £30 Million Investment in Plymouth for EV Battery Recycling Facility

June 17, 2025

Altilium, a UK-based clean technology group focused on sustainable energy solutions, has announced plans to invest £30 million in the development of a new electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling facility in Plymouth, according to its recent company statement. The announcement was made during a site visit by representatives from Plymouth City Council and Devon County Council to the location of Altilium’s upcoming ACT 3 scale-up plant.

As reported on the company’s official website, the ACT 3 facility will be a first-of-its-kind commercial-scale battery recycling plant in the UK. Once commissioned—expected by late 2026—the facility will be capable of processing batteries from approximately 24,000 end-of-life EVs annually, recovering valuable materials such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt for reuse in domestic battery production.

The project is anticipated to create over 50 high-skilled jobs in engineering, R&D, and operations, helping to position Plymouth as a regional leader in the UK’s green energy transition.

During a tour of the 174,000-square-foot site, city and county council officials reviewed progress on the project and met with Altilium’s leadership team. Councillor Tom Briars-Delve, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change at Plymouth City Council, welcomed the investment, stating:

“It is fantastic to see Altilium continue its commitment to Plymouth, investing in more facilities to scale-up their innovative technology for sustainable recovery of critical minerals from EV batteries. This is exactly the type of company we are keen to support as it is boosting the next generation of green, well-paid jobs for local residents. We look forward to the build out of this new facility.”

To date, Altilium has already attracted £14 million in inward investment, supported by international partners such as Chile’s SQMi, Japanese conglomerate Marubeni, and Mizuho Bank. As part of its growth strategy, the company is also preparing to launch a Series B1 retail funding round, in partnership with Republic Europe (formerly Seedrs), opening to public investors from June 16.

The initiative is part of Altilium’s broader goal to establish a domestic circular economy for critical battery materials, reduce the UK’s reliance on imported raw materials, and support its net zero targets through technological innovation and local engagement.
