VELUX Group Signs Long-Term Agreement with Novelis for Low-Carbon Aluminum Supply

June 05, 2025

VELUX Group has officially entered a long-term commercial agreement with Novelis, a global leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, to supply high-recycled-content aluminum for its roof windows and accessories. According to a statement on the company’s website, this partnership replaces a previous letter of intent signed by both parties in 2022. Under the terms of the new agreement, the aluminum used in VELUX products will now contain more than 70% recycled material, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of its production process.

The deal also sets an ambitious target to lower the carbon footprint of VELUX’s aluminum to 3 kg CO2 equivalent per kilogram of flat-rolled aluminum or less by 2030. Klaus Lorentzen, Senior Vice President of Products and Innovation at VELUX Group, stated, “This agreement really demonstrates our strong commitment to reach this very ambitious goal within just five years. It also secures the steady supply for several years of a key roof window material with a desirably low carbon footprint.”

Novelis’ aluminum is renowned for its environmental benefits, offering a reduction in energy use and emissions by up to 95% when compared to primary aluminum. This makes the material a key enabler for sustainable solutions in the building sector. As reported by Novelis, the aluminum alloys supplied to VELUX are specially optimized for roof window production, combining both high performance and sustainability.

Michael Hahne, Vice President of Commercial for Novelis Europe, commented, “Partnering with strong brands like VELUX is a testament for sustainable innovation. By giving aluminum scrap new life again and again, we are working towards our 3x30 Vision by becoming the world´s lowest-emissions provider of flat-rolled aluminum.”

Novelis and VELUX have worked together for over 40 years, with their latest collaboration focusing on reducing the carbon footprint of the aluminum used in VELUX products. As of 2025, more than 50% of the aluminum supplied by Novelis to VELUX has been replaced with high-recycled content, and both companies are committed to further increasing this figure in the coming years.

“Aluminum is an essential material used for external protection of our roof windows and accessories and therefore also a significant contributor to our scope 3 emissions,” said Lorentzen. “By shifting to low-carbon aluminum, we are paving the way for the next generation of VELUX roof windows and accessories.”

With over 98% of its carbon footprint attributed to Scope 3 emissions, VELUX acknowledges that collaboration with key suppliers like Novelis is critical to achieving its decarbonization goals. The companies’ continued work together will be essential in helping VELUX reduce its overall environmental impact.

This agreement represents another milestone in VELUX’s ongoing efforts to decarbonize its value chain and continue leading the way in the development of sustainable building materials.
