AISI: U.S. Steel Shipments Dip Slightly in August Despite Year-on-Year Growth

According to the latest data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), U.S. steel mills shipped 7.76 million net tons of steel in August 2025, down 0.5% from July but up 5.6% from August 2024.

Despite the month-to-month dip, overall shipment levels remain robust. Total shipments for the first eight months of 2025 reached 60.7 million net tons, a 3.7% increase from the same period last year, reflecting steady industrial demand amid a shifting manufacturing landscape.

AISI data showed that within product categories, corrosion-resistant sheet and strip rose by 2%, while hot-rolled sheet and strip slipped 2%, and cold-rolled sheet and strip fell 5% compared with the same period in 2024.

The modest monthly decline aligns with broader market dynamics, as the U.S. steel sector faces mixed signals—rising construction and automotive demand on one hand, and global price volatility on the other. Analysts noted that higher input costs and slowing export orders may have tempered shipment growth during late summer.

Meanwhile, ongoing federal infrastructure programs continue to support domestic steel consumption, with long-term forecasts pointing to a gradual yet sustained recovery. The industry is also advancing investments in low-carbon technologies to meet evolving DOE and EPA policy frameworks.

While August shipments softened slightly, the year-to-date growth underscores the industry’s resilience and adaptation to both economic and environmental pressures. Stakeholders remain cautiously optimistic heading into the final quarter of 2025, supported by infrastructure spending and an improving manufacturing outlook.
