TerraCycle Launches Nationwide Recycling Service for Nicotine Vape Devices in the U.S.

According to company reports, TerraCycle Commercial™, a division of recycling company TerraCycle®, has launched a nationwide collection and recycling service for nicotine vape devices in the United States. The programme is designed to provide compliant recycling solutions for used vape hardware, while nicotine pods will be managed through incineration in accordance with applicable legal requirements.
The new service expands TerraCycle’s capabilities in handling complex waste streams and offers a turnkey solution for households, municipalities, schools, hotels, businesses and other organizations seeking compliant vape device disposal options. The service includes collection containers, prepaid shipping, device recycling and nicotine pod disposal.
Used vape devices have become an increasing waste management challenge due to their mixed-material construction and embedded lithium-ion batteries. Improper disposal can create safety risks, particularly when damaged batteries are exposed to conditions such as compaction during waste collection or processing. According to a report from the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), fires linked to disposable vape devices in waste facilities result in significant annual costs in the United States.
“Through the dedication of our R&D team, our operations and compliance experts, and the strategic investments made to grow TerraCycle, we are proud to deliver a national solution for vape device recycling in the United States,” said Tom Szaky, Founder and CEO of TerraCycle.
Under the programme, collected vape devices are processed through TerraCycle’s recycling system, where compliant devices are disassembled and separated by material type for recycling under the company’s Recycling Guarantee. Lithium-ion battery components and other recoverable materials are managed through established recycling channels, while nicotine-containing pods are disposed of through incineration in compliance with regulatory requirements.
TerraCycle offers three container sizes for consumer and organizational collection programmes. The 1.25-gallon container can hold approximately 30 devices with a 22-pound weight limit, the 2.5-gallon container can hold approximately 75 devices with a 35-pound limit, and the 5-gallon container can collect approximately 155 devices with a 55-pound limit.
For larger collection programmes, TerraCycle Commercial also provides bulk pallet and full truckload (FTL) shipment options to support higher-volume recycling needs.
The company said the service is intended to provide an alternative to traditional hazardous waste disposal methods while supporting the recovery of materials from increasingly common electronic waste streams.
