Samsung Galaxy S25 Wins ReMA Award for Its Eco-friendly Design

May 12, 2025

Samsung Electronics has officially announced that its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S25, has been honored with the prestigious 2025 Design for Recycling Award. Presented by the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA), the award is the highest recognition in the industry for excellence in the innovation of product design, with a focus on sustainability and recycling.

ReMA, a global non-profit organization representing over 1,700 companies across 40 countries, aims to raise awareness of recycling and its environmental benefits. The Design for Recycling Award recognizes companies that incorporate innovative practices to reduce the environmental impact of their products.

Sustainability at the Core of Galaxy S25

According to Samsung, the Galaxy S25 stands out for its impressive use of recycled materials, particularly in its battery technology. For the first time in a Galaxy device, Samsung has incorporated recycled cobalt, a critical material used in the device’s battery. The company achieved this through its newly established Circular Battery Supply Chain, which recycles cobalt from old Galaxy devices and discarded manufacturing materials. This system reduces the need for newly mined cobalt and lowers the overall environmental footprint of the device.

In addition to recycled cobalt, the Galaxy S25 utilizes eight different recycled materials across its components, including aluminum, steel, and rare earth elements such as neodymium. A groundbreaking feature of this model is the use of recycled materials in its armor aluminum frame, ensuring that every external component of the device contains at least one recycled material. This innovation not only enhances the device’s recyclability but also contributes to its overall environmental score.

Samsung’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the device itself. The packaging of the Galaxy S25 is made entirely from 100% recycled paper, eliminating the need for single-use plastics, further supporting the company’s eco-friendly goals.

Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Daniel Araujo, Vice President of Samsung’s Sustainability Management Office, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, emphasized the significance of the Galaxy S25’s design as a crucial milestone in Samsung’s journey toward greater circularity in its products and operations. He stated, “Galaxy S25 represents an important milestone in our journey to enhance circularity in our products and operations, combining cutting-edge innovation with responsibility for the planet. We will continue expanding our efforts to create a more sustainable future for future generations.”

Samsung’s sustainability goals are set high for the coming years. The company is committed to transitioning to 100% renewable energy across its global DX operations by 2027. Moreover, by 2030, every Samsung mobile device will integrate at least one recycled material into each product module, setting a new industry standard for eco-conscious design, according to the company.

Robin Wiener, President of ReMA, praised Samsung for its leadership in sustainable product design. “Samsung has demonstrated true leadership by incorporating design for recycling principles into every phase of the Galaxy S25,” he said. “Their use of various recycled materials shows a clear commitment to designing the products we rely on every day with innovation and environmental responsibility.”

The 2025 ReMA Design for Recycling Award will be formally presented to Samsung at a ceremony on May 14 at the ReMA Convention in San Diego, California.
