MacroCycle and Meta Sign Agreement to Support U.S. Recycled PET Production

According to company reports, MacroCycle Technologies and Meta have signed a multi-year agreement under which Meta will purchase environmental attribute certificates (EACs) linked to recycled PET (rPET) production from MacroCycle’s first commercial plant in the Southeastern United States.

The agreement is designed to create long-term demand for lower-carbon recycled materials while supporting the development and financing of MacroCycle’s first commercial-scale U.S. facility. The plant is expected to produce approximately 5,000 metric tons of recycled PET annually.

MacroCycle will generate third-party verified EACs through the production of rPET, a plastic widely used in packaging and textiles. The company’s SolvoGenesis™ platform uses a solvent-based process to dissolve and purify PET from mixed and contaminated plastic waste while retaining the polymer chain. MacroCycle says the process can produce material intended to replace conventional fossil-fuel-based PET.

For Meta, the EAC purchase provides a mechanism to address emissions associated with plastics in its supply chain. Devon Lake, Head of Net Zero Strategy at Meta, said the company expects early procurement of lower-carbon materials to help support the development of emerging markets, similar to its approach in sectors such as cement and steel.

MacroCycle said Meta’s multi-year commitment provides the product demand needed to support financing and construction of the new plant. The facility is also expected to create U.S. jobs during construction and ongoing operations while diverting PET and polyester waste from landfills and incineration.

The companies cited challenges in the U.S. recycled PET market, including reliance on imports. According to the announcement, the United States imports more than 40% of its virgin PET and more than 20% of its recycled PET, while domestic rPET capacity is declining.

The project is intended to convert domestically generated plastic waste into U.S.-produced recycled PET, supporting a more localized supply chain for the material.
