Hydro Supplies High-Recycled Aluminum for Cadillac OPTIQ EV Through Hydro CIRCAL

According to company reports, Hydro, automotive supplier Shape Corp. and General Motors (GM) are introducing high-recycled-content aluminum into a safety-critical automotive application through the use of Hydro CIRCAL in the Cadillac OPTIQ electric vehicle (EV). The front bumper system of the EV will feature aluminum containing at least 75% post-consumer recycled (PCR) scrap, produced at Hydro’s recycling facility in Cassopolis, Michigan.
The collaboration demonstrates the use of recycled aluminum recovered from end-of-life products and returned to new vehicle manufacturing. Shape Corp. will engineer and assemble the front bumper system according to GM specifications, while Hydro will supply the Hydro CIRCAL aluminum used in the component.
Hydro CIRCAL is produced using recycled aluminum recovered from sources including end-of-life vehicles, windows, doors and electrical cables. The material is processed through Hydro’s recycling operations and converted into new aluminum products for applications requiring consistent mechanical performance.
The Cadillac OPTIQ application represents one of the first U.S. uses of Hydro CIRCAL in a structural, safety-related automotive component. The front bumper beam is a crash-management structure located behind the exterior bumper cover, designed to absorb and distribute impact forces during collisions while helping protect vehicle occupants, pedestrians and critical EV systems.
“By bringing recycled aluminium back into demanding vehicle applications, we can reduce embedded emissions, strengthen material circularity and make better use of the resources already in circulation,” said Duncan Pitchford, Vice President Recycling, Hydro Aluminum Metal.
Hydro will supply the recycled aluminum from its Cassopolis facility, which supports localized production and regional material supply chains in the United States. The companies said using locally recovered scrap helps demonstrate how recycling networks can return valuable materials from existing products into new automotive applications.
Hydro CIRCAL has a reported carbon footprint of 1.5 kilograms of CO₂ equivalent per kilogram of aluminum or lower, representing an estimated 70% reduction compared with the North American average carbon footprint for primary aluminum production. The material is designed to meet automotive requirements for strength, energy absorption, corrosion resistance and formability.
The adoption of recycled aluminum in EV components reflects growing efforts across the automotive industry to reduce embedded emissions and improve material efficiency. As electric vehicle production expands, manufacturers are increasingly focusing on lower-carbon materials and more resilient supply chains.
