Cascades Invests $6.9 Million to Upgrade Recycled Boxboard Plant in Quebec

Cascades Inc. has announced a $6.9 million investment to upgrade equipment at its uncoated recycled boxboard manufacturing facility in Kingsey Falls, Quebec, aiming to increase production capacity and improve product quality for food packaging applications.

The investment targets the company’s Papier Kingsey Falls plant, where several new pieces of equipment have been installed since September to enhance sheet quality control and operational performance. The upgrades are designed to improve the physical properties of the boxboard, including surface finish and printability—two key requirements for food packaging materials.

Company executives said the modernization project will help Cascades better meet evolving customer requirements while reinforcing its position in the recycled packaging market. Improved sheet quality is expected to support higher-value applications, particularly in packaging segments where visual appearance and printing performance are critical.

“This project will enable us to increase our capacity and remain a valued partner for our customers,” said Hugues Simon, president and chief executive officer of Cascades. He added that the investment reflects the company’s commitment to strengthening its industrial footprint in Quebec and supporting long-term growth.

Commissioned in 1972, the Kingsey Falls facility produces uncoated recycled boxboard for both industrial and food packaging markets. The plant employs 68 people and is considered a major regional employer.

Cascades said the upgrade also aligns with its broader sustainability strategy, which focuses on using recycled fibers to manufacture packaging products with a reduced environmental footprint. Recycled boxboard plays an important role in the circular packaging economy by transforming recovered paper into new packaging materials.

Founded in 1964, Cascades operates nearly 60 facilities across North America and employs about 9,000 people. The company manufactures packaging, hygiene products and recycling solutions and has built its reputation on integrating recycled materials into its production processes.

In recent years, Cascades has also been recognized in sustainability rankings, including the Global 100 index compiled by Corporate Knights, which lists corporations considered among the world’s most sustainable.
