Amcor has partnered with Belgian fertilizer producer De Ceuster Meststoffen NV to roll out a recycle-ready polyethylene packaging solution across DCM’s European product line, the companies said in a joint announcement. The move replaces a previous multi-material structure that was not compatible with most existing recycling streams, aligning the packaging with evolving European Union circular economy targets.

The new flexible packs are made from mono-material polyethylene film and contain 35% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content. They are available in formats ranging from 650 grams to 7 kilograms. According to life cycle assessment data cited by the companies, incorporating 35% PCR content results in a 17% reduction in carbon footprint compared with the prior packaging format.

The launch comes as EU policymakers tighten packaging sustainability requirements under the bloc’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation framework, which aims to increase recyclability and recycled content while cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Analysts say mono-material designs are becoming a preferred route for brands seeking compliance, as they simplify sorting and mechanical recycling processes.

Technically, the packaging combines machine-direction oriented polyethylene (MDO-PE) with a functional sealant layer. The MDO structure is designed to enhance tensile strength and puncture resistance while maintaining barrier performance against moisture and gas ingress—key considerations for fertilizer products sensitive to humidity. The seal configuration is engineered to reduce deformation, and the added rigidity helps smaller formats remain upright on retail shelves. A high-gloss surface finish supports branding visibility at the point of sale.

DCM, founded in 1976, has positioned sustainability as a core part of its corporate strategy. Company representatives said the packaging upgrade is intended to complement broader carbon reduction and environmental performance goals. Amcor executives described the project as part of the company’s ongoing effort to scale recyclable flexible packaging solutions across Europe.

Industry observers note that flexible packaging has historically lagged rigid formats in recyclability due to complex laminates combining multiple polymers or foil layers. However, advances in MDO-PE films and sealant technologies are enabling brands to achieve performance specifications without sacrificing compatibility with polyethylene recycling streams.

While the inclusion of PCR content supports carbon reduction targets, analysts caution that stable supply of high-quality recycled resin remains a constraint in parts of Europe. Demand for food- and nonfood-grade PCR is expected to increase as regulatory mandates expand in the coming years.

For fertilizer manufacturers, packaging durability remains critical to prevent product degradation and minimize waste in distribution. The partners said the new structure maintains protective performance while supporting recyclability objectives.
