Origin Materials and Hordijk Join Forces to Mass Produce Sustainable PET Bottle Caps in Europe

August 11, 2025

According to a joint announcement, U.S.-based sustainable materials technology company Origin Materials and Dutch packaging leader Royal Hordijk Packaging have entered into a strategic partnership to mass produce polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle caps, marking a significant step toward advancing circular packaging solutions.

According to information published on the company’s official website, the collaboration will see Hordijk—known for over 100 years of innovation in sustainable packaging—use its PET extrusion capabilities to manufacture PET sheet for use in CapFormer production lines. These lines, owned by Origin and operated within Hordijk’s EU-based facilities, will convert PET sheet into high-speed-produced bottle caps, including tethered caps that comply with upcoming European Union packaging regulations.

John Bissell, co-CEO of Origin Materials, said in a press release that Hordijk’s manufacturing expertise, extensive European footprint, and extrusion capabilities will help improve the capital efficiency of CapFormer operations. “We look forward to producing billions of PET caps together and carrying packaging forward to its next evolution,” Bissell noted.

Hordijk CEO Rik Hennink emphasized that the company’s mission is rooted in circularity and reducing environmental impact. “Partnering with Origin to mass produce PET bottlecaps and investing in extrusion to scale production aligns with our mission and roadmap. We believe mono-material packaging solutions produced with Origin point toward the future of high-performing, sustainable products,” Hennink said.

Industry observers note that PET caps developed by Origin offer multiple advantages, including enhanced recyclability, lightweighting potential, and extended product shelf life. The market for caps and closures is estimated to exceed $65 billion globally, according to industry data cited by Origin Materials. With partners like Hordijk, the company aims to tackle some of the most challenging sustainability issues in the packaging sector.
